<lj:music>So What! - Pink</lj:music>

Heard on the Hill - Predictions for an unpredictable 2009

Heard on the Hill: Predictions for an Unpredictable 2009
By Emily Heil and Elizabeth Brotherton
Roll Call Staff
January 26, 2009

No one really knows what 2009 will bring — after all, who would have thought, a year ago, that we’d be talking about a depression that can’t be helped by Zoloft, or that Trig was anything other than a high-school math class?

Nevertheless, HOH pulled out our crystal ball, Ouija board and a cocktail shaker for good measure, to try to figure out what we’ll be writing about — and what you’ll be buzzing about — in the year to come.

Here are our oh-so-scientific predictions:

February: Several of the celebrities who came to town for President Barack Obama’s inauguration decide to remain in Washington and seek jobs in the White House and Congress.

Hip-hop artist Jay-Z joins the staff of House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), where the rapper’s rap sheet (he once pleaded guilty to stabbing a rival record exec) proves useful in corralling wayward Democrats. “It’s a good look for me right now,” he tells HOH. “I can’t wait to start hurting people.”

Seeing no hope in overtaking Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) as the longest-serving Member of Congress, Rep. Mary Bono Mack instead takes a shot at stringing together the longest name in Congress. The California Republican begins on Valentine’s Day divorcing and marrying a series of men, yielding the unlikely moniker: Mary Bono Mack (the Knife) Donalds Aloysius Kennedy Jolie-Pitt Whitaker.

She copyrights the title to bolster her royalty income from “I Got You Babe.”

March: With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, proud Irishman Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) introduces legislation to force all McDonald’s restaurants to serve Shamrock Shakes at all American locations year-round. Currently, the shakes are only offered a few weeks before the holiday, and only at select restaurants.

“It’s ridiculous that all Americans can’t enjoy this delicious Irish-inspired beverage whenever they see fit,” King says of the famed vanilla shake, which is flavored with mint extract and dyed green for extra gaelic flair. “McDonald’s must wake up to their discriminatory actions.”

Congress passes the measure overwhelmingly, but not before various Members amend the bill with language requiring McDonald’s to bring back the McRib and Arch Deluxe.

April: Expected Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner fulfills his commitment to avoid embarrassing, avoidable mistakes by filing his taxes electronically with H&R Block rather than TurboTax. Despite his pulling an all-nighter, the Internal Revenue Service audits him again. But he overrules the investigation and asks for a do-over.

“This is the change the president was talking about after his second swearing-in,” Geithner explains later.

Republican Norm Coleman finally renounces all legal claims to his former Minnesota Senate seat. He also announces a departure from his consulting job with the Republican Jewish Coalition for an undisclosed but lucrative post lobbying on behalf of large, flat states.

The notably toothy ex-Senator also accepts a side job as a pitchman for Crest Whitestrips The more lucrative gigs, he explains, allow him to trade the basement apartment with a hot plate that he endured during his Senate career for a tonier Georgetown address. “Hey, a man’s gotta eat,” he tells HOH.

May: Weeks before the finale of American Idol, songwriting Sen. Orrin Hatch appears as a guest mentor on the program, leading the 20-something contestants to perform ditties such as “Freedom’s Light,” “I Love Old Glory” and the toe-tapper “Together Forever,” which the Utah Republican wrote for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008. After decades of writing music in relative obscurity, Hatch suddenly becomes an overnight star and is even picked to pen Beyoncé’s new album.

Meanwhile, Members become concerned that Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) hasn’t been seen on any television news programs in, like, three days. “I just get shy sometimes,” Schumer, dodging cameras, tells a reporter.

June: Taking the Green the Capitol Initiative a step further than many staffers would like, Chief Administrative Officer Dan Beard installs green roofs on House office buildings and replaces the cafeterias with pick-your-own-produce stands.

Taco Salad Day is replaced by Bushel of Bok Choy Day.

In a landmark ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts writes that students must now “Pledge to the United States of America, Flag Allegiance.”

July: Since Congress passed legislation that fixed the economy, health care, education, the environment and even Social Security within President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, bored Members find themselves planning their August recess getaways. Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) even sends out a “Dear Colleague” letter asking Members to sign on for a jaunt to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. “I’m renting a beach house and am planning to rent out Señor Frog’s one night! It’s going to be sweet,” she writes.

August: Over recess, all of Washington goes abuzz after shirtless photos emerge of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) vacationing with Bono in Mustique.

The Internet sensation over the paparazzi pics rivals that of the vacationing Barack Obama in Hawaii in 2008 and put Reid on the cover of Us Weekly’s “Best Beach Bods” issue.

September: The spirit of bipartisanship is suddenly broken when Members find there isn’t enough money left to fund the federal government. In an effort to raise some extra cash, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) jointly announce that they’ve agreed to sell the naming rights to the Capitol building — now called “The Capitol presented by Coca-Cola” — for $2 million. While the two leaders announce the effort a success — “Hey, at least we found an American company who’d do it,” Pelosi quips — Pepsi-loving Members are outraged by the effort, creating a new Congressional divide along lines of soda preference rather than political party.

October: House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) suffers a freak tanning-bed accident in his hideaway office due to a power surge, with some reports indicating the surge stemmed from the recently implemented use of cow flatulence to power the Capitol complex as part of the Green the Capitol Initiative.

The accident damages Boehner’s tear ducts, rendering him unable to cry. Also, the mishap apparently impairs the Republican leader’s fashion sense: The usually dapper Boehner begins wearing bedroom slippers and hand-me-down cardigans from Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) around the Capitol.

In related news, Frank earns a spot on GQ’s “best dressed” list, having spent his stimulus check on spiffier new duds.

November: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), seeking to avoid all the flak she took in 2008 for pardoning a turkey while others were slaughtered around her, issues an executive order declaring it open turkey-hunting season. “I just decided to skip the whole pardoning thing for a big hunt, which is what real pro-America Americans love to do anyway,” Palin says. “I urge all Alaska residents to grab their guns, jump into helicopters and start shooting those birds, which are linked to terrorists.”

December: Oscar buzz builds for the “Frost/Nixon” sequel, “Olbermann/Bachmann.” Despite critics’ raves for Ben Affleck’s performance as the outraged newsman and Tina Fey’s as the unhinged Congresswoman, the film puts up dismal box office numbers.

Talk turns to 2010 races, with Florida’s 16th district emerging as one of the most interesting. Political observers expect former Republican Rep. Mark Foley and Democratic Rep. Tim Mahoney, each of whom held the seat before suffering respective scandals, to vie for the seat in what pundits describe as a “disgrace-off.”

He is usually portrayed bearing the Miraculous Sausage, but alas, the story behind it has been lost to the ages, and no one is quite sure what kind of sausage it was, or what exactly was so miraculous about it.

Not surprisingly, St. Mellivora is the patron of sausage-makers, as well as beekeepers and, for some reason, professional dowsers. Bratwurst makers, however, eschew the worship of St. Mellivora in favor of St. Ungo the Well-Endowed, for reasons that we will not get into here.

http://ursulav.deviantart.com/art/St-Mellivora-and-the-Sausage-87570701

So my neighbor came over the other night and we shared a bottle of this fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon by Mettler and it had hints of mocha, raspberry, oak and other stuff. It was quite delicious to say that least and then we went out on a limb and got some dark chocolate to with it. It turned out to be a really fun if not drunk evening. :) I have never on purpose drunk wine with the intent of eating chocolate with it and surprisingly it really does change the flavor of the wine. Very interesting evening indeed. :)

So I'm reading up on the latest memo of security measures sent by my boss to the entire company and I find myself in there as a contact listed as a NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR!!! That is quite the step up from IT Support Specialist, but she was very quick to say it's not my official job title but it basically is what I do since I do take care of the network for the entire company. Woohoo!!

I wonder if this will have any reflection on my review coming up in a few weeks. ;)

So my son comes home from Kindergarten today full of ideas about "way back then". That's what he called it, he said they talked about "way back then" today.

So coming directly from Danny this is what he learned in school today (in his own words):

Way back then they didn't have cars, they had covered wagons and me and Papi would sit in the front and steer the horses while Mommy and Lili sat in the back in the covered wagon part. Way back then Mommy and Lili had to do all the cleaning and there were no washing machines only buckets of water and we had to use soap on our clothes and wash them that way and cook stuff, there was no pizza or chicken wings. Me and Papi would have guns like long shot guns and I would carry the turkey and Papi would carry the deer, there were lots of ways to capture the turkey like using a trap and then we would take the turkey home and carve it up.

So they are building a log cabin in his class made out of a cardboard box and strips of newspaper painted brown, he's very excited about this project. He couldn't stop talking about "way back then" when he got home from school today.

They grow up so fast! :)

Well it's been awhile so I think I should update. Plus it's a bit past Christmas so I can share all my wonderful goodies that I got with everyone. Lets see the last time I was in here actually posting was before I got my new job so I'll start there. Thanks to my wonderful friend Kyra I got this fantastic job about ten minutes from my house doing what I absolutely love. I started at the beginning of November and things have just gotten better, I've never once looked back and if I did it was only to wish I'd left Merchant Link sooner. Although that's not to say I don't miss my friends there because I do, I miss them terribly but I have found other ways to see them and still keep in touch so I guess finding the perfect job does have it price. So things are going really great in the job area.

After Thanksgiving we got a couple early Christmas presents; one being a Nintendo Wii. Oh My God. It is so much fun! We can literally play for hours and the time just flies by. We started with one game and now we have about five to choose from but a couple of them have multiple games on them so it's never a dull moment. I was also given a laptop complete with a carrying case, wireless mouse and Printer/scanner/fax by my dear husband earlier in the season. However for Christmas he gave me this nifty keyboard that you set your laptop on and can type while looking at the laptop screen as if it's a regular monitor, it's very cool and now I have this awesome keyboard that doesn't move the mouse all over the place when I'm trying to type. Also the keyboard is very quiet… another plus in my opinion!

On to December, it was a very busy month. My company is growing by leaps and bounds and had just acquired a new office in Conshohocken, PA, well it was actually in Bluebell but we were moving them from Bluebell to Conshohocken so my new boss asked me to go up there with her the weekend of the 15 th to set up all the computers and server room. It was quite an experience. I've never been on a business trip where I didn't have a PowerPoint presentation and no suits but all jeans and sweatshirts! Needless to say I loved it and I got along really well with my new boss and we just really hit it off.

Christmas eve we spent at Fausto's aunt's house, we did the usual midnight celebration complete with a champagne toast and a big turkey dinner. Then we opened presents until two am. My favorite part was Lili. She and asked Santa for a the Bratz DVD in her letter to him earlier in the month but she was under the impression that Santa couldn't make DVDs and therefore she wasn't getting it. The look on her face when she opened that DVD brought tears to my eyes and hers! I've never seen my six year old get emotional like that and it was beautiful. She ran to me showing me what "Santa" brought her and kept saying "thank you, thank you, thank you" over and over and over again! Around three am we crashed at my parent's house and spent Christmas morning with them and the kids got more presents. We brought our Wii to their house so everyone could enjoy it. My favorite present of all was a DVD my sister-in-law gave me… "The Sound of Music" it is my all time favorite movie and I've always wanted the DVD. Now I have it!

So here we are all caught up. It has been a wonderful season for me and my family. For New Years we're planning to stay in with the kids and watch the ball drop on TV. Then onto 2008!! I can already feel it's going to be an excellent year!

    <lj:music>We need a Little Christmas Now</lj:music>

It’s the hap happiest season of all… It is certainly my most favoritest time of the year. And I can’t believe it, I’ve got a little over a week left before Christmas and I’m done with my Christmas shopping. The only person I have left is my husband’s sister and we always wait until the last minute for her so my husband and I can leave the kids with her and go together to get her something ultra special… for all the help she gives us over the year (she lives with us).

I got my husband the most awesome present and since he never reads this thing I’m going to shout it out to the world… I got him a BOAT!!! Okay okay, it’s more like a raft but it fits four people comfortably and it has all the stuff it needs for a motor and it’s just very exciting for me because I know it will totally surprise him and he won’t be expecting it all and most of all he’ll totally love it! :) Every year I have the hardest time buying for him because he’s a computer geek and everything he likes is super expensive or I have no idea if he wants/needs or even likes it but this year was different, I found something I know he will love and we can enjoy as a family.

So my mother in-law arrives on Tuesday and my brother in-law arrives on Wednesday. I took Wednesday through Friday off next week and both my husband and sister in-law have to work so I’ll be the only home entertaining with my children, it promises to definitely be interesting next week. But everything is happening so fast my office Christmas party is tomorrow and my husband the romantic got us a hotel room and his sister is taking the kids over night for us, then Sunday we have a Christmas party to see old friends who we haven’t seen in at least two years. Next Thursday is the babysitter’s Christmas party and Friday I’m taking my daughter, mother in-law and sister in-law to see the Nutcracker Ballet at the Olney Theatre in Olney, MD.

Saturday we have another Christmas party and Sunday is Christmas Eve… Whew! Time Flies when you’re having fun!!! :) Happy Holidays Everyone! Wishing you the best!! :)
So, I posted all about my Disney Trip on my myspace blog... and I wasn't going to post about it here but I will talk about my time share. I know people hear the word Time Share and groan and say it's such a waste of money and it is ridiculous to pay so much money for something you only use once a year or in my case once every other year. But I have to say I hear the word Time Share and it really excites me. We had an ownership meeting while we were there just to let us know of the changes they have made... HOLY COW!! When we initially signed up 6 years ago they gave us 40,000 Starwood Points just for signing up. We had no idea what Star points were and have hence never used them. Well, I finally found out what they are and now holy cow I can go anywhere I want and use say oh perhaps 10,000 of them to stay in a 5 star hotel. I was surfing all about it online today and I found this incredible hotel in New York that we can book a weekend getaway without even making a dent in our 40,000 points. But that's not the only perk, they also informed us that since we initially bought a 2 bedroom we can split the two bedroom into a one bedroom and use it every year if we want to. We can go anywhere we want any time of the year and we don't have to go from Saturday to Saturday anymore... we do this... Example:

We can fly to Orlando on a Wednesday, stay at our home resort Sheraton Vistana Villages until Friday, which we can then fly out to Bermuda from Friday to Sunday and stay at the sister resort for a couple days and then fly back to Orlando and finish our stay at Sheraton Vistana Villages for the remainder of our week or even just fly home using the last few days to go somewhere else at another time. And it costs us Nothing because we've already paid for it as we paid for the timeshare. So basically we just need to get plane tickets.

So this thing rocks and I just had to share because between the points for the weekend getaways and the vacationing wherever whenever... wow!! That's all I have to say and for people like us who only get 2 weeks vacation a year it totally fits our schedules and conforms to our needs. Gotta Love it!!

On another note... the Bean just turned 5 yes, she is officially of Kindergarten age which means I have to start thinking about all the paperwork for school and junk... Yet this morning I had to laugh she woke up and said "Mommy, I have a bladder infection." I said "really? where does it hurt?" She pointed to her throat and said "here, and I have a frog and a fly in there too." I just had to laugh, and to top it off she got her ears pierced and she looks just so adorable now. Oh my goodness!! :)

Okay I'll share one priceless moment from the Disney break... The turkey saw Mickey Mouse pat the Bean on the head as he ran out to greet people and the turkey's eyes got as big as saucers as he announced in an awed kind of voice "oh my gosh, Mickey Mouse just touched my SISTER!"

That's all folks! I'll be back next time with more fun news! :)

This weekend we got everything out of our half finished room in the basement and took down our sorry excuse for a ceiling. This weekend we will be redoing the ceiling and spackling, sanding and painting. As soon as that is complete we just need to finish the closet and voila! We will now be considered a house with 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms!! :) It's so exciting!! The Bean and the Turkey will both have their own rooms... although I wonder how well that will go over currently they make their way to our bedroom and end up sleeping with us almost on a nightly basis, so I have to wonder how well their own rooms are going to agree with them.

But it does feel good that after three years of living in this house we will finally be completely done refinishing it. :)

This past weekend was so awesome. We went to the movies Friday night with the children we saw "Open Season" and it wasn't bad for a PG animated film, although I am wondering how many more of these I am going to have to sit through before the kids get interested in the more grown up stuff.

Saturday the tootsie roll started her ballet and tap dance class she's a returning veteran and the teacher loves her so she kept asking her to show the other students what she learned last season. :) She loved it, but for the Winter season she will be with the Five year olds since she will then be five Finally!!! It will no longer be Pre-Ballet and Tap it will just be Regular Ballet and Tap. Awe!! my baby's growing up!!

The Peanut continues to amaze me, yesterday he was joking yes actually joking with the tootsie roll in the car. She called him a big baby and he laughed and laughed and laughed saying I'm not a big baby I'm a big boy! :) So cute!!

So Saturday we went to our friend's wedding where we would be spending the entire night away from our babies. :) It was so much fun. We just had the best time dancing all night and the hotel was beautiful everything about it was gorgeous. I just loved it. Our friend was gorgeous and her husband too. :) So fun!! We got home Sunday about noon and I napped until 4pm. I got ready for soccer. We tied our game 1-1. I got hurt which really sucked. I ran into this chick's elbow and it knocked the wind out of me. I have never felt so much pain in my life. Whew. I had to be helped off the field. A bit embarrassing but oh well! I'm fine now. Things are good, we went out to dinner last night and ate at the Red Lobster... mmmm... I love that place!

And that's all I have to say today. :) Have a fabulous one!!

So... The Dear Husband started his awesome new job on Monday. It has been a week of hell for me. He initially told me that in his interview they informed him that his hours would 8am to 4:30pm or 5ish depending on work and what not. So to me; that means I have to get up an hour earlier every day to make sure we are in Silver Spring by 8AM.

Well Wednesday I blew up at him. He called and said "I'm done, meet me downstairs in five minutes." I took my time logging off my pc and saying goodbye to people and made my way downstairs to meet him. It was 5:15 at the time. I waited and waited and waited. It was cold that day I'm talking like low 60's high 50's. I'm standing outside waiting, five minutes go by. I called him. He said "give me one minute" I said "fine." I went into his building where it was warmer and stood in the lobby.

35 more minutes went by before he finally came down stairs. I was so livid. We were late picking up the kids I stood waiting for him for 40 freaking minutes. And to top it off I had on brand new heels that were killing my feet and no place to sit. So let him have it. I said we are getting here at 8am and we aren't leaving until after 5:30 everyday. Do they really insist you work THIS much? He said well, the other people in the office come in when they want and leave 8 hours later. GRRRRR. Then why are we busting our asses to get here by 8AM every freaking day. He had no answer for me. But yesterday he left at 5pm and I am hoping today he will as well. I also threatened to start driving myself to work wasting gas and mileage on our other car.

So that is my venting for the day. I have a feeling he just loves his new job so much he wants to work as much as possible to impress them. He's even going in tomorrow (A Saturday) just to to do some inventory. He is the biggest workaholic I've ever met.

And to top it off... I'm exhausted. I haven't changed my sleeping pattern so I'm getting one less hour of sleep every night and working an extra hour at work too. The poor babies... refuse to wake up so early and they both sleep in the car all the way to the babysitters! lol

Whew! I feel better now! I hope next week calms down and we can go back to our 9-5:30 schedule.
